An absolutely outstanding barn conversion in a semi-rural village on the fringe of Chelmsford.
The Chaise House is one of three properties formulated from a 'model farm', constructed in 1852. These grade II listed barns have exceptional heritage, and are fundamental to the history of the local area. The barns were designed by the renowned Victorian architect and Philanthropist, Frederick Chancellor. Chancellor counted, amongst other examples of his work, the design and construction of Felsted school and the celebrated Chelmsford Corn Exchange. In 1888 Chancellor went on to become the first Mayor of Chelmsford, a position he held no less than 7 times.
The Chaise House is a fantastic conversion providing 5 bedrooms and includes the room which originally housed the farms chaise carriage. Particular features of the building include a superb vaulted dining room and part vaulted snug, huge windows in all of the principal areas and a magnificent and unique covered courtyard which is accessible from the principal reception rooms.
The shared gravelled drive leads to a parking area outside each of the three properties. Next to The Chaise House is a double open fronted carport with storage behind. Adjacent is an enclosure which houses the oil storage tank and beyond the shared private drainage system. In front of the property is an enclosed lawned garden area and in addition to this at the rear there is a unique covered courtyard enclosed under a high timbered ceiling inset with skylights and supported on ornate cast iron columns. The courtyard is divided into three low maintenance all season terraces serving each of the three properties and segmented by walls which retain the original mangers. The terrace is an ideal entertainment and alfresco dining area.
